DG-1001 Sailplanes

Four DG-1001 Versions

DG-1001 offers two pure glider variations, the DG-1001 Club and DG-1001S.  Both are excellent trainers and are ideal for aerobatic or cross-country flying.

  • The DG-1001 Club comes standard with 18m wings and fixed nose, main, and tail wheels.
  • The DG-1001S comes standard without the nose wheel but with a very high spring mounted electric or manual retractable main wheel with disc brake, tail wheel, and removable 20 meter wingtip extensions with winglets.  Also included are 160 liter water balast tanks in the wings and a fin tank.

If  you are considering a powered sailplane the DG-1001 offers two variations, the  DG-1001M self-launcher and the DG-1001T sustainer.  A DG1001TE (all electric sustainer) was also developed, but production was suspended due to the high cost of the batteries and lack of orders.

  • The DG-1001M with a Solo 2 625 02i electric fuel injected engine has more power, more redundancy, smoother operation, and reduced noise levels than ever before.  It is the ultimate in two-place freedom and performance.
  • The DG-1001T is the ideal cross-country trainer.  The simple light weight Solo 2 350 C sustainer engine has ample power for maintaining and even climbing, as may be needed to get you home, on those days when the lift has unexpectedly disappeared.
  • The DG-1001TE  (no longer available)  The all electric motor is operated by simply moving a power lever fore and aft.  With the propeller extended and flying faster than the power lever is set for, the power inverter converts the motor into a generator which recharges the batteries.   With the low drag of the clean extended pylon, it is possible to keep on climbing in weak thermals and store this thermal lift energy in the batteries for later use when needed.

Aerobatics

The DG-1001 can perform all flight maneuvers required for Federation Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) unlimited category aerobatic competition on a single flight, and recover to level flight without exceeding aircraft limitations.  The glider has been designed and optimized for training and aerobatics.

In the “Utility” category the aerobatic maneuvers approved with both 18m and 20m wing spans are: spins, inside loops, lazy eights, chandelles, and stall turns (Limit loads: +5.3 to -2.6).

In the “Aerobatic” category additional maneuvers are approved with the 18m wing span:  inverted flight, half loop and half roll, half roll and half loop, slow roll, half snap roll from normal to inverted flight with half loop, and half negative snap roll from inverted to normal flight (Limit loads +7.0 to -5.0).

Please see the “Compare Models” tab above for specific information on each DG-1001 model.

Thoroughly Tested

The DG-1000 structure has gone through extensive load testing providing confidence in the safety of the design.

Trim Box

The fully integrated DG-1001 Trim Box with weights totaling 26.5 lbs. featured in the vertical fin allows pilots to easily optimize the center of gravity of the aircraft for different pilot loads.  By use of the trim weights (brass plates), the weight of the second pilot can be easily compensated.  This is particularly important for competition flying and spin training.  The ballast configuration can be seen at a glance through the Plexiglas cover from the outside of the glider.  In addition, indication of the number of weights inserted in the aft ballast box can be observed via the number of blinks from an LED indicator light in the forward instrument panel.  The same trim weights can also be used in the front cockpit under the pilot’s legs (optional trim weight boxes) to compensate for lower pilot weights.

State of the Art Self-Launching

The DG-1001M is the ultimate in high performance two-place self-launching gliders. Its powerful 69 hp water cooled two-cycle engine with electronic fuel injection and ignition control provides the extra safety needed on hot summer days at high altitude airports.

Training

The DG-1001’s flight characteristics make it an ideal trainer, whether it is basic training, advanced aerobatic training, or cross-country training, the DG-1001 can do it all. Versatility is one of the many reasons the US Air Force Academy has chosen the DG-1001 for their aggressive cadet training program (photo by Raymon Albright).
